Culture

Somerset is proud of its cultural heritage.  Whether it is embracing our past or investing in upgrading our cultural infrastructure, here are just some of the cultural projects Somerset is proud to be a home to.

Bridgwater Carnival

Bridgwater’s Guy Fawkes Carnival, held in November, is a mammoth spectacle that snakes its illuminated way through the town in a procession of amazing floats, known locally as carts. It’s the oldest event of its kind in the UK and money raised is shared between local charities and the Carnival.

Glastonbury Festival

Glastonbury Festival is thought to be the biggest green field festival in the world generating at least £100 million a year. The Festival, at Worthy Farm in Mendip, grows from a dairy farm to a pop-up city roughly the size of Southampton most summers.

Hauser & Wirth

Hauser & Wirth Somerset is a pioneering world-class gallery and multi-purpose arts centre which acts as a destination for experiencing art, architecture, and the remarkable Somerset landscape through new and innovative exhibitions of contemporary art. An impressive, landscaped garden, designed by internationally renowned landscape architect Piet Oudolf, sits behind the gallery buildings and includes a changing programme of outdoor sculptures, and houses the Radić Pavilion, designed by Smiljan Radić. Centred around a core belief in conservation, education and sustainability, Hauser & Wirth Somerset offers a wide variety of special events including talks, seminars, workshops and screenings, as well as an extensive learning programme for local schools, young people and families. The centre also provides resources including a bookshop and dedicated learning room.
