As a newly established Unitary Authority (April 2023), Somerset Council is driven by a bold ambition: to deliver the best possible outcomes for the people and residents of Somerset.
We are looking for leaders with the vision and ambition to help us deliver a council that will tackle 21st century challenges, using 21st century solutions.
The right candidates will be innovators who bring people together and build strategic relationships with our partners and communities to work as a team as we harness and build our collective power to deliver outcomes for the people of Somerset.
We are shaping an authority where we empower our workforce to do what is important – our processes will be streamlined and redesigned to support us to do that work efficiently and effectively. At our core, we will be focusing on delivering value and impact, we will be maximising the use and opportunity of digital, Artificial Intelligence and data insight to help us realise our vision. We will automate any work that is repeatable and can be mapped.
You and your team will be problem solvers: highly skilled, agile, continuously learning and locally based in our communities. You will help create a service focussed on providing value to the people of Somerset using the design principles our workforce has helped shape to support the delivery of this vision.
You will be doing all of this in a county filled with distinctive communities, market towns and rural villages, shaped by a proud heritage and unique geographies. At heart there’s a common core to Somerset: friendly, peaceful, with a strong sense of community.
In the winter, the carnivals that take place all over Somerset bring light into the short days and long nights. Glastonbury Festival, music, craft and a rich diverse cultural life are catalysts for growth which we need to do more to capitalise on.
We want to lead the South-West in building a green regional economy, using our excellent location, growing supply chains and generating sustainable employment that fits with our values.
The challenge of planning for the future comes with the responsibility for protecting and restoring Somerset’s precious, but fragile, environment.
Our vision is for market towns to thrive, offering young families a great place to live. Children will have excellent early life opportunities and training will be tied to work in successful local businesses. We aim to better connect people across Somerset with jobs, homes, and opportunities to help the county prosper.
We hope our vision of an open, efficient, and high-performing council that delivers the best for its communities matches yours. If you think you could be the person to deliver it, we would love to hear from you.
