About Mid Sussex

Covering almost 130 square miles in the south of England, Mid Sussex includes the towns of East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill.

The district is well known as a highly desirable place to live. Much of the area is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes sections of the South Downs National Park and High Weald.

Haywards Heath is located in the centre of the district and is where you will find the Council offices. The town’s character is defined by its impressive Victorian and Edwardian houses, and its excellent rail connections make it a very popular choice for people who wish to commute into London (in just 45 minutes). The town is home to the Conservation Area of Muster Green, the location of an important battle at the start of the English Civil Wars. Other local highlights include Victoria Park and Beech Hurst Gardens, offering beautiful green spaces to enjoy.

Burgess Hill is located right next to the South Downs, offering easy access to stunning countryside along with an excellent retail and cultural offer.

Situated on the edge of Ashdown Forest (the location that inspired the stories of Winnie-the-Pooh), East Grinstead is a bustling market town that can trace its history as far back as the 13th century. This history is evident today in the form of 14th century timber-framed houses that sit alongside Georgian and Regency buildings. The town is the most northern point of the Bluebell Railway which enables visitors to travel on one of the oldest surviving steam trains along the Bluebell Line which stretches through the High Weald and Mid Sussex countryside.

Rail enthusiasts also won’t want to miss the Ouse Valley viaduct which is located between Haywards Heath and Balcombe and crosses the River Ouse.
