Welcome to Nottingham City Council’s transformational journey

Thank you for your interest in joining Nottingham City Council at this defining moment in our history. Nottingham is on the cusp of a profound transformation, one that reflects both our resilience and our commitment to building a brighter, more sustainable future for our community. We are steadfast in our resolve to overcome the challenges of recent years, and with a bold, forward-thinking vision, we are charting a course to elevate the city to new heights.

A city in motion: Progress and ambition

Nottingham is a city characterised by progress, resilience, and ambition. Over the last year, the Council has made substantial strides; we have welcomed government-appointed Commissioners, a new Leader, Deputy Leader, and Executive have been elected, a new Chief Executive has been appointed, and together we have developed a forward-looking strategic plan. This plan has been designed not to restrict our ambitions, but to amplify them, positioning Nottingham for prosperity and success on the national and international stage.

While we face a challenging financial landscape, we remain resolute in our determination to turn these challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. These financial constraints only serve to sharpen our focus, urging us to act decisively in delivering improved outcomes for our residents. The path forward is clear: we must transform, adapting with agility and foresight to meet the needs of the future.

A milestone in progress: The Government’s response

In August 2024, the Commissioners submitted their first report to the Government, outlining both the substantial progress made and the considerable challenges that remain. The response from Jim McMahon MP, Minister of State for Local Government, acknowledged the progress Nottingham has been made and underscored the work that lies ahead. While we are on the right track, achieving financial stability and delivering the high-quality services that our residents deserve will require bold, transformative decisions and significant organisational reform.

The focus now shifts to modernising our operations, streamlining our processes, and learning from the best practices of other councils that have navigated similar challenges successfully. This is an extraordinary moment for Nottingham—a moment to not merely meet our obligations but to rethink how we operate, setting the foundation for lasting, sustainable success.

A strong foundation for the future

Our Improvement Plan and the forthcoming budget proposals lay the groundwork for long-term financial sustainability and tangible improvements in service delivery. Feedback from both the Commissioners and the Government affirms that we are on the right path, building a more efficient, resilient Council that will be capable of delivering exceptional, cost-effective services to our residents for years to come.

The role of Leadership in transforming Nottingham

At the heart of our transformation is the leadership I am proud to provide as Chief Executive of Nottingham. I am committed to guiding the city through one of the most pivotal periods in its history, embracing this extraordinary time of change to shape a future that is both innovative and resilient. I am focused on driving forward the necessary changes, navigating complex challenges, and seizing emerging opportunities. By working closely with both the Council and the Commissioners, I am fostering a collaborative approach to ensure that our transformation is not only about meeting statutory obligations but also about rethinking operations and setting Nottingham on a path toward sustainable, long-term success.

I am supported by a strong Corporate Leadership Team, which has been further strengthened through new recruitment to key roles. Each of these leaders brings a wealth of expertise and vision, and together, we will be central to delivering the high-quality, responsive services our residents deserve. Our collective leadership will ensure that Nottingham remains on track for long-term success

An exceptional leadership opportunity

This is a truly exceptional opportunity for those with the vision, drive, and determination to lead one of the country’s core cities through a transformative period. Leading Nottingham through this change will require exceptional leadership, determination, and a commitment to achieving lasting, positive outcomes for the city and its residents. For those ready to take on this challenge, the rewards will be immeasurable.

We are excited about the prospect of you joining us in shaping Nottingham’s future. Together, we are creating a city that is innovative, resilient, and ready to thrive in the years ahead.
