Welcome Letter from Sophie Hosking, Strategic Director (Neighbourhoods)

sophie-hosking-enhanced.jpg We want everyone to be able to lead their very best lives. We want them to enjoy living in a safe, clean and sustainable environment. We want people to be able to play their part in developing and protecting the places we all call home, and to have control and influence over the things in our communities that matter locally.

Our aim is for people to lead safe and healthy lives in decent homes and be able to enjoy the wonderful leisure and cultural activities that Cornwall has to offer. And we are also here to provide a safety net for those most in need.

We support the activities of our everyday lives. We help and enable people and businesses to live and work within the framework of regulation that keeps our residents and visitors safe, healthy and free from harm.

We will use our enforcement responsibility in order to protect people and places, and when it is in the public interest. We need to help build resilience and self-sufficiency, enabling communities to get on and do the things which can be done by themselves, but also making sure we provide support where it is needed.

We support the diversity of our communities and value their differences. In summary, the work of the Neighbourhoods Directorate is to support and help people and communities to lead their very best lives, and this key leadership role is at the heart of the Council’s ambitions to achieve vibrant, safe, supportive communities in a thriving, sustainable Cornwall.

The post-holder will be responsible for a set of services that include Resilient Communities, Housing Options, Culture, Leisure and Libraries, Business Improvement (across the whole Directorate), Registration and Bereavement Services and also hosting the Senior Coroner.

The Service Director for Community Services is one of the senior roles that comprise the Council’s Leadership Team (CLT).  The role will work closely with the Strategic Director Neighbourhoods, CLT colleagues and Members to set and deliver the Council’s Business Plan.
