Director of Public Health

Location: Chatham

Salary: up to £116,424

Reference: A000621

Status:

Medway covers a varied and flourishing area of the North Kent coast, with a rich history and an ambitious vision for the future. Over the past 25 years, the region has been transformed, and today Medway is one of the most promising growth areas in the UK.

A big part of our economic success story is the fact that Medway is a wonderful place to live and work, learn and play. With green space over 13 times the area of Hyde Park, our natural assets are just as significant as our outstanding connectivity. The marshes and estuaries here are of global importance, and around 300,000 wetland birds overwinter on the mudflats and saltings.

Our vision is to continue this remarkable trajectory. By 2037, we want Medway to be a leading waterfront learning city, celebrated for its revitalised urban centres, its riverfront developments, its stunning natural and historic assets, and countryside. We are building a place that up to 320,000 people will call home, and which they will be proud of.

Good public health underpins everything we want to achieve, and – with a £15m budget – it’s a high priority for the Council. Our dedicated public health team is widely respected by colleagues and stakeholders alike, and we are currently mid-way through an important long-term Health Determinants Research Collaboration with the University of Kent’s Centre for Health Services Studies.

We want to appoint an exceptional Director of Public Health to build on the sustained achievements of recent years. A visible, inspiring and ambitious system leader, our new DPH will be committed to improving residents’ health and wellbeing, reducing health inequalities and protecting the community from infectious diseases and environmental threats. For the right person, it’s an unmissable career opportunity.

As the Council’s principal adviser on health improvement, health protection and healthcare public health, you must demonstrate a high level of technical expertise in the Faculty of Public Health Competencies. Skilled at working collaboratively with local communities, you’ll quickly gain the trust and confidence of residents, health professionals and elected members.
