Faerfield are currently looking for an Interim Head of Waste for a local authority.

The successful candidate will oversee operational delivery across all the Council's waste sites and services, manage multi-million-pound contracts, provide strategic oversight, and drive efficiency, innovation and environmental excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Operational Management: Ensure safe, efficient day-to-day running of recycling centres, transfer stations, and haulage fleet.
• Health & Safety: Maintain compliance and safety for staff, contractors, and the public.
• Financial Control: Manage waste budgets (circa £90m per annum), deliver savings, and forecast future requirements.
• Contract Management: Work with central teams to ensure contractor compliance and service excellence.
• Major Procurements: Support and advise on waste management practices and operational excellence.
• Closed Landfill Sites: Ensure regulatory compliance and maximise revenue opportunities.
• Line Management: Directly manage 7 senior staff and overall responsibility for 200+ operational staff.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with 12 Waste Collection Authorities and other partners.
• Project Delivery: Lead assigned projects to agreed outcomes, timelines, and budgets.

 Experience Required

• Chartered Waste Manager (MCIWM) or equivalent experience.
• Extensive senior leadership experience in waste operations.
• Strong knowledge of waste policy, legislation, and operational techniques.
• Proven ability to manage large-scale contracts and multi-million-pound budgets.
• Skilled in compliance (environmental permitting, health & safety).
• Commercial acumen to influence behaviours and authority direction.
• Experience in culture change programmes and delivering efficiency savings.
• Excellent communication skills across diverse audiences.
